Class Overview:
This class invites you to explore color, form, and intuition through improvisational quilting. Whether you’re new to improv or looking to expand your creative approach, you’ll learn practical techniques and design concepts while letting go of perfection and embracing play.
What to Expect:
- Inspiration & Examples:
- View completed quilts and works in progress that showcase the possibilities of improv design.
- Enjoy a slideshow exploring color value, balance, and pattern interaction.
- Techniques & Practice:
- Learn to transform traditional quilt blocks into freeform, expressive versions.
- Hands-on demonstrations of cutting and sewing improv-style (no rulers required!).
- Create and refine three distinct block types across three class sessions, developing a total of nine foundational skills.
- Design Exploration:
- Discuss how color, fabric type, and pattern choice influence design flow. Experiment with combining solids, batiks, and prints to build visual rhythm and cohesion.
Final Goals:
- Build confidence and trust in your creative instincts.
- Complete a collection of individual blocks that can be assembled into a wall hanging or small quilt.
- Learn to create a one-of-a-kind quilt backing using leftover fabrics for a sustainable, cohesive finish.
- Receive guidance and resources for machine quilting or longarm finishing to bring your piece to life.
